How to add Power Steering Fluid

The power steering system in your vehicle facilitates easy turning of the steering wheel, contributing to smoother low-speed maneuvers, such as parallel parking.

Numerous modern vehicles feature Electronic Power Assist Steering, eliminating the need for steering fluid. However, certain older vehicles rely on power steering fluid to maintain optimal system performance. Owners of such cars should regularly inspect the fluid levels, ideally every month, to ensure the smooth operation of the power steering system. In the event of a low power steering fluid reservoir, it's essential to replenish it to maintain the health of your power steering system.

The following outlines the procedure to accomplish this task.

Acquire a quart of the appropriate power steering fluid suitable for your vehicle. Refer to your owner's manual.
Position your vehicle on a flat-level surface and engage the parking brake.
Securely fasten or remove any loose clothing and keep your arms at a distance from the cooling fan(s) while inspecting the power steering fluid. The fans may activate automatically, even when the engine is not running.

9-Step process

1. Initiate the engine and allow it to run until the temperature gauge reaches the standard operating range.
2. While the engine idles, turn the steering wheel entirely to one lock and then to the opposite lock, repeating this process several times.
3. Turn off the engine and raise the hood.

4. Identify the power steering reservoir, typically located on or near the engine, characterized by a white or yellow reservoir with a black cap.
5. Use a towel or rag to clean the reservoir, preventing dirt from entering during maintenance.
6. Examine the fluid level in the reservoir by pulling out a dipstick or observing "MIN" and "MAX" lines on the exterior.

7. If the dipstick or reservoir level falls between "MIN" and "MAX," no additional fluid is required.
8. If the fluid is below the "MIN" line, add power steering fluid incrementally, checking the level after each addition. Avoid surpassing the "MAX" line.
9. Securely replace the cap or dipstick, ensuring a tight seal.
