Side and rear windows are made of tempered glass, while windshields are typically made of laminated glass. When tempered glass is chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged, it must be fully replaced. Laminated glass, however, can potentially simply be repaired if chipped, cracked, or damaged. Whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced depends entirely on the size of the crack or chip. If it is smaller than a dollar, especially if it’s closer to the edge of the windshield, and not right in the middle, it’s much easier to repair to the point that you cannot tell it was originally damaged. Chips, cracks, or damage that is larger than a dollar are repairable, but it’s better to replace the windshield to keep the integrity of the glass high enough to remain reliable.
Replacement of glass with a crack or chip larger than a dollar is advised. While it can potentially be repaired, it makes the overall integrity of the glass less strong.
Damage to tempered glass makes it more likely to break into pieces, which demands replacement instead of just repair.
If damage to the windshield goes in more than halfway into the glass, both the inner and outer layer of the windshield have been damaged and require replacement.

A crack that travels from one side of the windshield to the other demands replacement due to the edges being where the windshield is strongest. The strength of the windshield is lowered when the edge is damaged, so replacement is needed.
