Summer Maintenance Checklist for Used Vehicles
While buying a used vehicle can save you money upfront, it’s important to perform regular maintenance on the vehicle to avoid issues arising that can become costly to repair. With summer in full swing, it’s the perfect time to check on and perform certain maintenance work, including checking your tires, keeping your cooling system running smoothly, topping up on fluids, and testing the battery. Read on as our team at Whiteoak Lincoln has prepared this helpful summer maintenance checklist to keep your used vehicle in peak operating condition, and visit our team in Mississauga for assistance getting your vehicle serviced, or to buy your next used vehicle today!
Tire and Wheel Summer Maintenance
The first thing to do in the summer is check your tire pressure, as hot pavement can change the PSI in your tires. Check the pressure every month, and check at least once for tread depth so you’re prepared to take on summer rain as well. If you notice any cracks or bulges on the sidewalls, it might be time for new tires, as this is a sign that they might have structural issues that can lead to blown tires.
Cooling System Summer Maintenance
It gets pretty hot in Mississauga in the summer, so make sure your climate control system is ready to handle many days of use. First, make sure the coolant level exists between MIN and MAX, and that it isn’t dirty or degraded. Test the air conditioning system for speed and airflow as well, keeping an ear open for any clunking noises as it runs as this indicates the compressor in the AC unit needs fixing.
Fluid Level Summer Maintenance
In the summer, both you and your vehicle need to stay hydrated, so keep its fluid levels topped up! While checking your coolant level, take a peek at the engine oil as well. If you’re near the changing range for the type of oil you use (every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometres for regular oil, every 7,500 to 10,000 kilometres for synthetic-blend oil, and every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres for fully synthetic oil), now’s the time to do so. Other fluid levels to top off in the summer include your brake, transmission, and windshield washer fluid, but only if they need it.
Battery Summer Maintenance
Us Canadians know all too well that winters can drain a car’s battery quickly, but so too does weather on the opposite extreme. Hot, humid weather can also drain a car’s battery, so take the time to get it tested to ensure it’s able to hold a good charge. While testing, check for any terminal corrosion too, as leaking acid is a clear sign that it’s time for a new battery.
